A new Quiet Connections Meet Up is starting in Cubert

By the end of HushFest at St Cubert’s Church in July, there was already talk of continuing something locally. That idea has now become a new regular Quiet Connections Meet Up in Cubert.

From Thursday 1st October, Wendy, Kath, Sue and Sarah will be helping to run the Meet Up at St Cubert’s Church every other Thursday afternoon, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. The new Meet Up will join Quiet Connections existing network of Meet Ups regularly running from Liskeard to Penzance. 

The idea came up around HushFest, when St Cubert’s Church was one of the main festival venues. Afterwards, Wendy, one of St Cubert’s Church Wardens, described hosting the exhibition and opening celebration as “a joy”, and said Quiet Connections was now well known in Cubert. “There is the possibility of starting a group for the Newquay area in the church, and that would be a great outcome – watch this space!” she said. 

And now Wendy has brought together a team to bring the Meet Up to life in Cubert and there is a date in the diary.

Wendy explains why St Cubert’s Church felt like a good place to continue:

“St Cubert Church has its own atmosphere of peace and tranquillity and the workshops during the HushFest exhibition thrived in the quiet surroundings. Starting a Meet Up here seemed like the perfect opportunity to offer hospitality and refreshment to the wider community – in a very quiet way!”

From HushFest to a regular Meet Up

HushFest brought exhibitions, creative workshops and our opening afternoon of live music by quiet performers from our community to St Cubert’s Church. 

People from the church and local community helped us welcome visitors and support the festival. There were people making and performing, people volunteering, people joining workshops and people simply spending time looking around the exhibition. 

When we asked afterwards what had stayed with people from HushFest, people spoke about simply “being a part of something.” and having the “opportunity to be with people whilst occupied doing something enjoyable.” 

People had joined creative activities from lino printing to heart-making and playing with clay and appreciated having something they could get on with themselves, while interacting with other people as and when they wanted to. 

That kind of side-by-side activity is a familiar part of our Meet Ups too.

There might be something creative on the table, a book or project somebody has brought from home, tea and biscuits, wordsearches and colouring, and conversation that comes and goes. Nobody has to fill every quiet moment.

There was interest during HushFest in having more opportunities to connect too. One person told us, “I’m really thinking about joining.” Another wondered, “I wonder if we could set up a group here.” And someone who had attended the Newquay Meet Up before the local volunteers could no longer run it, said: “I loved the Newquay group and came because of the newsletter. I’d love that group to start up again.” 

This is a new Meet Up, with a new local team, based at St Cubert’s Church, for the people living and working around Cubert, Newquay and the surrounding area. 

Wendy, Kath, Sue and Sarah have been working with us to get things ready, with the plans supported by St Cubert’s Church Parochial Church Council. 

Quiet Connections is providing support and resources behind the Meet Up, while St Cubert’s Church offers the meeting place and the local team shows up to welcome people each fortnight. 

The Meet Ups are currently funded by The National Lottery Community Fund (TNLCF). However, as we enter our third year of TNLCF Project this October, that funding begins to taper and we have more funding gaps to fill, so we’re hoping that some of our community members will enjoy getting involved in fundraising activities to keep the both Meet Ups and Quiet Connections itself going – people are always surprised when they hear about the behind-the-scenes costs and tasks we need to cover to keep community activities running! 

What will the Cubert Meet Up be like?

If you haven’t been to a Quiet Connections Meet Up before, you might want to know a bit more about what happens before deciding whether to come.

Our Meet Ups are for people who identify as quiet, introverted, highly sensitive or shy, or who experience social anxiety.

There will be refreshments and usually some simple optional activities available. You might chat over a cuppa, join in with something creative, bring a book or your own project, or spend some time quietly alongside other people.

You can go at your own pace. Our approach is: It’s okay to talk and it’s okay to be quiet too.

Our Quieteers are all different. Some of us can be very talkative when we feel comfortable. Others prefer listening. Some people find it easier to get to know someone while doing an activity alongside them, rather than making conversation the main activity. Some prefer just being in quiet company. 

Whether you consider yourself introverted, shy, sensitive or experience social anxiety, the one word that seems to describe every quieteer is ‘gentle’. 

There is no expectation to join every conversation or activity. 

You don’t need to decide which particular label describes you before coming along. A Quieteer might consider themselves introverted and confident, extraverted and sensitive, or ambiverted and shy, for example. But the one word that seems to describe every quieteer is ‘gentle’. If you recognise yourself somewhere in the experiences we talk about and would like to spend time with other quieter people, you’re very welcome. 

And because the venue is a church, we want to be clear about that too: The Meet Up isn’t religious and there is no faith element. St Cubert’s Church is providing the venue and some of the people helping to run the Meet Up are connected to the church, but this is one of our usual Quiet Connections community Meet Ups. 

Joining us from 1st October

The first Cubert Meet Up will be:

Thursday 1st October 2026
1:30pm to 3:30pm
St Cubert’s Church, 1 Churchtown, Cubert, Newquay, TR8 5EZ

The group will then continue every other Thursday from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

• 10th December

We’re starting fortnightly and, if there is enough local interest, the Meet Up may become weekly in future.

It’s free and there’s no need to book. If you’d like, you can sign up for local email updates so we can let you know about any changes to the Meet Up. It also gives you the opportunity to ask any questions, or to hear from someone at Quiet Connections before your first visit. Or you’re very welcome to simply come along.

There is parking close to St Cubert’s Church, and the nearest bus stop is on Holywell Road, around four minutes’ walk away. St Cubert’s Church is an old building and unfortunately isn’t currently wheelchair accessible. More detailed information about getting there and accessibility is available on the Meet Up page.
