Quiet Creations: Summer workshops for quieter children in Cornwall

New workshops for quieter children in West Cornwall this August

Some children are just naturally quieter.

They take their time. They feel things deeply. They might hang back and watch for a while before they join in. They might not say much in a group, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have ideas or things to share.

In noisy, fast-moving places, these children are often overlooked. They’re encouraged to speak up, be more confident, join in more quickly. But trying to fit into those louder spaces can be exhausting.

And the truth is, quieter children shouldn’t have to be louder just to feel like they belong.

This August, there’s a different kind of space opening up for them. A space that welcomes gentle natures and quiet voices. A space where children can take things at their own pace and express themselves in ways that feel right for them.

Quiet Creations

Our series of creative workshops across West Cornwall are specifically for children aged 8 to 12 who are shy, quiet or nervous in social situations. Children who might not enjoy busy summer clubs or who struggle with big groups.

The workshops are small and calm, with no pressure to talk or take part in any particular way. Some children might want to dive straight into making. Others might take a little longer to settle. Some might talk and connect. Some might not. It’s all okay.

The focus is on clay play and quiet creativity. Children will be gently guided to explore air-dry clay using simple tools and techniques. They can shape a creature, a bowl, or just enjoy the feeling of the clay in their hands. There’s no right or wrong way to take part. It’s not about what they make, but how it feels to have the space and freedom to create something that’s entirely their own.

Each workshop is co-led by Emma Saffy Wilson, a ceramic artist with a kind and calming presence, and Owen Skerritt, our Youth Programme Coordinator. Together, they’ll create a space that feels safe, respectful and unhurried.

There’ll be no more than eight children at each session, so the group stays small and the atmosphere stays relaxed.

We’ve chosen simple, familiar venues that are easy to access and comfortable to be in. There’ll be light refreshments available, and children are encouraged to wear comfy clothes that care-givers don’t mind getting a little messy.

Parents and carers are welcome to wait nearby if they’d like. There are parks, cafés and quiet spots close to each venue, and we’ll share all the details when you book.

These workshops are part of a bigger story. A quiet reminder that there’s nothing wrong with being a quieter person. That you don’t need to be louder to be liked. That there’s strength in gentleness, and beauty in doing things differently.

Sometimes, all a child needs is a little space. A little time. And people who celebrate them for who they truly are.
