Two free Creative Get-Togethers are coming to Saltash
We’re bringing two free Creative Get-Togethers to Saltash Studios this August, with one afternoon for adults and a separate one for young people aged 13–17.
As with all of our work, they’re for those of us who are introverted, shy or highly sensitive, experience social anxiety, or simply prefer quieter, lower-pressure ways of spending time with other people.
The adult get-together will take place on Thursday 20th August from 2pm to 4pm, and the young people’s get-together will be on Tuesday 25th August from 2pm to 4pm.
There are just 10 places at each, and both are free thanks to support from Saltash Town Council’s Community Chest.
Creating alongside other people
One of the things we’ve noticed through Quiet Connections is that it can feel easier to spend time with other people when there is something to do together.
That’s what these afternoons are built around.
There’ll be a few different creative activities set out around the room. You can settle into one, try several, bring something of your own to work on, or spend some time with one of the simpler activities we’ll have available.
Conversation is welcome, but it isn’t the point of the afternoon. Some people might find themselves chatting as they create. Others might enjoy sitting alongside people while mainly concentrating on what they’re doing.
We won’t be starting with an icebreaker or asking everybody to introduce themselves to the group. There’ll be time to come in, get a drink, have a look around and settle before choosing what you’d like to do.
What will be there?
Ellie has planned three main creative activities for the afternoons.
There’ll be a Reframe Quiet poster-making table, where you can explore quiet strengths through artwork. You can create something yourself or start with one of the colouring sheets if you’d prefer.
We’ll also have song lyric art, using lyrics from the HushFest Song as creative inspiration. There’ll be a set of headphones and an MP3 player available, along with a QR code if you’d rather listen using your own phone and headphones.
And there’ll be a textile table with wool and beginner crochet patterns for anyone who would like to have a go at crochet.
Each activity will have materials, examples and instructions available, so you can get started without having to wait for somebody to lead everybody through it together.
Alongside these, we’ll have some familiar Quiet Connections activities such as colouring, word searches and writing paper.
You’re welcome to bring a creative project you’re already working on too.
All the main materials are provided, including paper, colouring materials, paints, pens and pencils, crochet hooks and wool. There’ll be free tea and coffee, and you can bring your own drinks or snacks if you prefer.
You don’t need any previous experience of art, crochet or anything else we’re doing. These aren’t classes and there isn’t anything you’re expected to finish. The activities simply give us something to gather around while we spend the afternoon together.
Meet Ellie
Ellie Zalick from Quiet Connections will be there for both afternoons.
Ellie is a quieter person herself and will be welcoming everyone, helping people find their way into the room and joining in with the activities too.
We want the afternoon to feel like people creating together, rather than a facilitator standing at the front and everybody else following instructions.
If there’s anything you’d like to know before you come, you can get in touch with Ellie at eleanor@quietconnections.co.uk.
Parents and carers are welcome to contact Ellie about the young people’s get-together too.
A separate afternoon for young people aged 13–17
The young people’s get-together on Tuesday 25 August is completely separate from the adult event.
Quiet Connections has previously run youth Meet Ups in communities across Cornwall, and we know that having an activity to focus on can be a useful way for quieter young people to spend time around others without conversation having to fill every moment.
The Saltash afternoon follows the same principle.
Young people can move between activities, stay with one thing, talk with people nearby or spend more of the afternoon quietly creating.
There are only 10 places, so it will be a small group.
