Your Meet Up leader

Hi, I’m Janice.

I’ll be leading this Pop Up Meet Up alongside Hayley. I'll be guiding the event and leading you, as a group, through various singing activities. As a vocal coach, singer and singing for health practitioner, I love creating relaxing, uplifting and nourishing experiences to help people improve their physical and mental wellbeing through singing - and I would love to have you join me at this Meet Up so you can do just that.

What to expect

A relaxed, welcoming environment

This Singing for Wellbeing Meet Up will be held indoors in a private space where it's cosy and warm.

Singing as part of a friendly group

Singing simple melodies and harmonies of beautiful songs in a friendly group atmosphere with a shared sense of purpose, boosting your immune system and elevating your mood. You'll never be singing alone. Sing as a group also releases endorphins, reduces stress and increases oxytocin (bonding hormone), creating levels of trust and wellbeing within your group.

Discovering the power of your breath

During this session, you will learn good breathing techniques used for singing to de-stress, reduce anxiety, improve focus and boost the immune system. Rhythm, therapeutic sounds and gentle body movement will help us to release built up tension and relax.

Singing for enjoyment

This workshop is all about singing to feel good. Together, we will be learning songs with simple melodies and harmonies for the enjoyment of singing and putting into practice the breathing techniques in a fun, engaging, creative way,

Fun vocal warm ups

Together, we will practice vocal exercises which help with breathing, pitch, tone, rhythm, vocal flexibility, diction, vocal range and sound production.

Suitable for everyone

Janice has designed this workshop for people of all singing abilities, including complete beginners and those who may not think they can sing. Songs will be taught by ear with no experience of reading music necessary.

You can go at your own pace

Our intention is to help you grow, but there’s absolutely no pressure to participate or set any big goals. You’re invited to do what feels right for you.

Janice Edgerton, otherwise known as Janice M is a singer, vocal coach and singing for health practitioner. Hayley and Janice met many years ago on an 'Unlocking Potential' business start-up workshop. Janice lives near Truro with her husband and their dog Harbour and likes hiking in her spare time.

Janice has been a Singing for Health practitioner for a decade leading community choirs and creating and leading singing sessions for groups. She trained in Singing for Lung Health in 2021 and runs workshops through the charity Music For Good. During the Covid pandemic, Janice organised outdoor singing sessions in her local area, creating arrangements and leading small groups but in the winter months, her singing lessons are held in cosier spaces indoors! You can find out more about Janice and her work at janicem.com.

We would love to have you join us! It really doesn't matter how good a singer you are, this Singing for Wellbeing session is designed for people of all singing abilities, including complete beginners. Besides, you might be surprised how well you actually can sing - Janice believes that everybody has a singing voice, we just don't always know how to use it.

No, songs will be taught by ear with no experience of reading music necessary.

No, at no point will you be expected to sing alone. Janice specifically focuses on simple melodies and harmonies that we can sing as a group. The sound we make is a collective creation!

We're probably all feeling a bit nervous about singing with others. But as you know, in everything we do here at QC, nervousness is welcome and okay. You might also find it reassuring that Janice is very good at putting people at ease (just look at the feedback she's received for this workshop below). In fact, Hayley recently went along for a one-to-one singing lesson with Janice and, feeling surprisingly nervous about sharing her voice (after previous negative comments from others), was pleased to find Janice quickly made her feel comfortable and offered wonderful reassurance. It's all about having a go alongside supportive quieteers with similar experiences.

Singing has been proven to elevate your mood and improve your overall physical and mental wellbeing. Singing helps to reduce stress and anxiety, boosts your immune system and improves focus. Singing as a group will also allow for the release of endorphins and oxytocin (bonding hormone) which increases levels of trust and wellbeing.

We'll be learning songs with beautiful simple melodies and harmonies for the enjoyment of singing and putting into practice the breathing techniques in a fun, engaging, creative way.

We will begin with some warm up exercises. These will include gentle body movement, working with the breath helping to release built up tension and open up the lungs. We'll also practice fun and engaging vocal warm ups which help with breathing, pitch, tone, rhythm, vocal flexibility, diction, vocal range and sound production.
